Hemendrakumar has a special place in adult literature, although he is mainly known as an undisputed author of children’s and juvenile literature.

 

Born in Calcutta in 1888 AD. Father’s name is Radhika Prasad Roy. He started studying literature from the age of fourteen.

 

In 1903 AD, the first story called ‘Amar Kahini’ was published in Vasudha Monthly. He introduced a new era in children’s literature through numerous stories, novels, poems, essays and translated literature.

 

Hemendrakumar also wrote many books for adults. However, his contribution to children’s literature is unmatched. His extraordinary writing style is revealed in adventure, historical and detective novels especially for children. In addition, he has written eighty books for children, including poems, plays, stories of laughter and ghosts, juvenile novels, dramas, etc.

 

Bimal-Kumar, Jayant-Manik, Police Inspector Sundarbabu — the characters created by Hemendrakumar have been immortalized in children’s and juvenile literature. He edited the children’s monthly Rangmashal for a long time.

 

His notable juvenile books: Jakher Dhan, Abar Jakher Dhan, Jayant’s Kirti, Manhoo Pisach, Raktabadal Jhare, Derda Khokar Kand, King Kong, Bank of the Panchans, Second Dawn of India, Whip of God etc.

 

Some of his notable books for adults are Jakkar Alpana, Benozal, Padmakanta, Storma Yatri, Whom I Saw, Bangla Rangaloy and Sishirkumar, Omar Khayyam’s Rubayat etc.
